Here are some of the books that we find helpful when we want to teach mini polo. Please let us know your own recommendations.

Swimming Games and Activities (Jim Noble and Allan Cregeen) This is packed full of fun, graded activities for teaching swimming. As well as various activities including balls, it includes a section on water polo. This includes: a description of the game; ways to modify the rules; skills involved; and games to play.

The Journey through Aquatics: NPTS Aquatic Teachers Guide (ASA 2007) This folder provides a useful progression of skills, strokes and drills for the young player. It includes a description of the standards expected for the attainment targets for NPTS Stages 8 to 10 (Mini Polo) . Additionally, it provides a copy of the simple explanations and a restatement of the attainment targets as presented in the Parents' Guide.

Price: From £16

Introduction to Synchronised Swimming (ASA ) This accompanies the ASA Level 1 Synchronised Swimming Course. It has some useful sections on sculling and eggbeater.

British Water Polo: Core Skills and Drills (Nick Hume) This defines the core skills presented to players who attend Regional Training Centres and National Camps. It includes coaching points, photographs and drills for each skill. Skills include: leg drills, sculling and defensive positioning, water polo swimming, body control, body rotation, defending drives, releasing and passing. This valuable manual is not yet on general release, but is given to coaches at core skills seminars and training camps. May be available on request. An accompanying CD is also being developed.

101 Offensive Water Polo Drills (Cutino, J. and Cutino, J.) This is perhaps more appropriate for teaching older players, but some ball handling, passing and shooting drills may be adapted for use by youngsters.

101 Defensive Water Polo Drills (Cutino, J. and Cutino, J.) This is more appropriate for teaching older players, but some conditioning drills may be adapted for use by youngsters.

Total Immersion the revolutionary way to swim better, faster and easier (Laughlin, Terry and Delves, John) This is aimed at swimming coaches and is probably over the top for a polo coach. However, it has an excellent description of how balance, body rotation and body shape can effect the power and efficiency of frontcrawl. With some lateral thinking, the principles introduced could be applied to many polo skills. For instance, it helps in understanding the benefits of using long-axis rotation when passing and swimming.
